Inspired by embroidery
By Sophie Bowyer
This is my response to the 18th century embroidered pocket. The pocket is embroidered with flowers and leaves in a chain stitch which I recreated with smaller-scale embroidery. I took inspiration from The Dandy Style which was an elegant but bold style, first recognised in the late 18th century. I used scrap fabric and second-hand embroidery thread to create this coat and waistcoat. The 18th century male style was influenced by French royalty which was vibrant and flamboyant. Silk, satin and velvet fabrics were popular at the time. Knee length breaches, a shirt and cravat would have been worn with this.
