Scraps into diamonds
Scraps into diamonds
by Rahemur Rahman
With a title like Fashioning Our World, I thought about how my work speaks to collective craft and community. I wanted to use this as an opportunity to continue a conversation from my last collection, Children of the Rag Trade. A conversation about hand craft, work from the Global South, and how the fragments of who we are is built up off of other lives we experience.
This diamond patchwork textile is handmade from scraps from the collection, mirroring the designs but scaling them down. The textiles are all naturally dyed, and wax printed production waste material from Aranya in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The buttons are from an old shirt I no longer wear. This mini mannequin represents for me my own aims and dreams of how my creativity can feed into the bigger narrative that is our world.
